Allergy to feathers and down: myth or reality?

Made of keratin, like human nails and hair, feathers and down cannot by nature cause an allergic reaction.

Any discomfort may come from several other allergenic agents such as dust or dust mites, when bedding is not sufficiently aired or maintained. To guarantee perfect cleanliness and hygiene, Pyrenex feathers and down undergo several washes before being sterilised in an oven at over 100°.

The down thus becomes hypoallergenic. At the end of the process, the final product has reached a very high level of cleanliness. In reality, feather and down fillings evacuate moisture far more effectively than polyester and therefore present a much less favourable environment for the development of dust mites. Furthermore, the very tight weave of our cotton covers, originally designed to hermetically contain the down, provides a natural barrier against dust mites.

According to recent studies, down contains up to 8 times fewer dust mites than a polyester filling. The simplest way to reduce the risk of allergies is therefore to regularly care for your bedding. Machine washed and dried, items will be rid of allergenic agents, and feathers and down will regain all their loft.

"Filling Power"

Pyrenex's key strength is the filling power of its down, i.e. its loft. Measured in CUIN – cubic inches – it refers to the capacity of a given weight of filling to occupy a given volume. The greater the volume occupied, the higher the down's insulation and lightness performance. Products with a filling power above 500 are already considered very high quality. But the exceptional LEGEND 1859 down by Pyrenex, available in 90% down or 100% down in a few premium products, boasts an exceptional filling power of 850 cuin.

Thermal performance

Natural down is widely recognised for its excellent thermal insulation properties. Its unique structure makes it extremely effective at trapping air and providing natural warmth.

Down is made up of a central core from which fine, lightweight filaments radiate outwards. This three-dimensional structure forms numerous small spaces that trap air. Air, being an excellent insulator, helps to minimise heat loss.

Down is also valued for its ability to regulate temperature. It provides effective insulation in cold conditions while allowing a degree of breathability, which helps to wick away moisture and prevent overheating.
