Waterproof or water-repellent jacket? A question of balance
For a down-filled jacket, breathability is the key factor to look for, whether it is designed for sporting or more urban use, for extreme cold or milder climates. Our technical water-repellent fabrics, featured on most items across our spring/summer and autumn/winter collections, offer a major advantage in terms of comfort and protection. The Ripstop Quantumpro PERTEX® fabric, used on a selection of mountain jackets, is ultra-breathable while remaining water-repellent — as seen on our Meije mountain jacket for women or the Hudson XP for men, as well as on our Will or Wonder windbreakers.
For these technical garments, an overly waterproof fabric that neglects breathability would prevent you from staying dry during physical activity, if the moisture from your body cannot escape properly.
In our more urban range or our children's garments, which are suited to the unpredictability of everyday life, water-repellent or highly water-repellent fabrics will protect you whatever the circumstances. The filling must stay perfectly dry to ensure good insulation, which is why we use fabrics that are sufficiently breathable without acting as a complete water barrier on this type of product with natural filling. In the event of heavy rain, simply leave your jacket to air dry, or tumble dry it if the care label permits, following our advice : detach the fur trim if needed (they are all removable), place the jacket in the tumble dryer on a low temperature setting with dryer balls, until the down has fully regained its loft.
Which waterproof or water-repellent jacket should you choose?
If you opt for a waterproof jacket with or without a hood, for men, women, or children, we offer a selection of garments that make no compromise on breathability. Technical fabrics such as 37.5™ — a material that retains energy to keep you warm — are used in a selection of parkas that maintain your body temperature at an ideal level. This fabric also contains active particles (derived from bamboo charcoal) that capture and release water vapour to prevent the build-up of moisture. Garments made with this fabric will allow you to enjoy your favourite activities, such as trail running, hiking, or simply strolling along the coast or in the mountains.
Taped seams on certain more technical models provide that extra layer of everyday protection against the elements.
Other fabrics offer advantages that should not be overlooked: our new windbreakers are made from recycled synthetic fabric, effective against cool wind gusts from spring through to autumn, and highlight their eco-responsible and sustainable construction. The self-repairing Porcher Industries® fabric used on our Hudson Resist jacket features an innovation that is indispensable for sports enthusiasts and the absent-minded alike: in addition to its high water repellency, small holes and tears that may appear during intensive, demanding use can be repaired simply by rubbing between your fingers — it's like magic, the hole disappears!
