With the return of fine weather and warm temperatures, it is time to put away your winter bedding and bring out your summer bedding!

At Pyrenex, our bedding is 100% made in France within our Saint-Sever workshops. This expertise is the assurance of perfect mastery and therefore, for you, the guarantee of impeccable quality. Filled with small feathers and down from the finest farms in Aquitaine, the Pyrenees and Poitou, our bedding items are made to order and by hand, then checked by our seamstresses. In order to best meet your comfort needs inside your home, whatever the time of year, we offer a variety of bedding items, such as duvets, pillows, mattress toppers, cushions, blankets, eiderdowns, bed throws… All manufactured in Saint-Sever and filled with French natural down.

It is true that during summer, our needs are quite different from those in winter. Indeed, we tend to prefer sleeping with a mid-season duvet or something even lighter, or even prefer a bed throw as a cover placed on the bed, or to wrap up in a cosy blanket when temperatures become milder.

Everything you need to know about Pyrenex summer bedding terminology

When you choose to equip your home with Pyrenex bedding, several indicators should be taken into account to best meet your expectations.

For duvets, bed throws and blankets, here are the elements to consider:

  • The natural filling of Pyrenex is composed of goose and/or duck feathers and down in variable proportions depending on the intended use and the desired result of the finished product. Indeed, feathers and down have different physical structures that give each of them specific properties. A filling containing a higher proportion of small feathers will provide more "spring" and therefore more firmness. A filling richer in down will provide more softness. To find out more, discover the page on natural down.
  • The fill weight varies according to the intended use and the desired result of the finished product. For duvets, the higher the quantity of down per m², the warmer and fluffier they will be.
  • Summer duvets generally have a weight ranging from 80 to 150g/m².
  • Mid-season duvets contain a fill weight ranging from 150 to 220g/m².
  • Warm duvets have a weight of more than 220g/m². At Pyrenex, they can have a weight of up to 270g/m² for the warmest ones.
  • The TOG is a British unit of measurement for thermal insulation, that is to say the capacity to trap air and exchange it quickly. The higher the TOG, the warmer the duvet. Example: if a duvet's product sheet indicates a TOG of 12, this means it is a very warm duvet, ideal for winter. Another example: conversely, if a duvet's product sheet indicates a TOG of 7.5, this shows that the duvet is very light and ideal for summerTog rating — Pyrenex duvet
  • The "Filling Power" of Pyrenex down gives an indication of the loft power, which is calculated in CUIN — cubic inches. The higher the Filling Power, the greater the volume occupied, and the higher the down's insulation and lightness performance.

  • The cover quality: three elements should be taken into account when choosing the cover of a Pyrenex duvet.
  • The thread count: The weave density must be high enough to prevent the down from escaping. This density is calculated based on the number of threads/cm². The minimum for a cover designed to contain down is 78 threads/cm². The higher the number of threads/cm², the finer, lighter and softer the feel.
  • The finish: Overlock stitch, double stitching, piping, French seam, cassette and interior baffle.
  • The weave: There are different compositions for a 100% cotton duvet or pillow cover. Examples: plain weave, twill, satin, jacquard. To avoid perspiration and a feeling of heat, it is better to opt for a pure cotton cover.

Taking all of this information into account, you will be able to choose the bedding that meets your interior and sleep needs during spring, summer and autumn.

Mid-season duvets: essentials for the transitional seasons (and not only)

Mid-season duvets are greatly appreciated by many sleepers thanks to their versatility. Some people sleep with a mid-season duvet in winter if their bedroom is well heated, even though most sleepers prefer it for the transitional seasons. It is possible that those who feel the cold may sleep with a mid-season duvet during summer for extra warmth and lightness. This versatility is a result of the weight of these duvets, which ranges between 150 and 220g/m² and allows for better heat regulation.

We recommend opting for a mid-season duvet if your bedroom is heated to between 18°C and 20°C. In store and on our website, you will find many models such as the Colombie children's version, the Colombie, the Moorea Plus, the Saint-Lary Plus, the Papeete Plus Santé 180g/m², and the Papeete Plus 180g/m².

Furthermore, if your needs for warmth and lightness are constant throughout the year, mid-season duvets will ensure you consistent comfort whatever the season. Please note that some mid-season duvet models have an anti-dust mite treatment and can be joined together with press studs.
