What is the difference between a feather duvet and a down duvet?
Feathers and down are both of natural origin and come from ducks or geese. However, feathers and down have different insulating properties. Down comes from the belly and underwings of the birds mentioned above. Its structure gives it an insulating quality linked to its ability to trap air. Feathers, on the other hand, are far more abundant as they are found on all other parts of ducks and geese. They are slightly heavier than down but also firmer, allowing them to retain their shape for longer. Each material has its own advantage and a different use to best equip your bedding. At Pyrenex, our fillings are very often a blend of feathers and down in various proportions depending on the desired properties: more feathers for a firmer support (spring effect), more down for unrivalled softness.
Steps to follow for washing your feather or down duvet
If you have purchased Pyrenex bedding, it is important to follow the washing instructions carefully so that you can keep your duvet, down jacket or pillow in impeccable condition.
Unlike a synthetic duvet, which is washed once a month, a down jacket or a natural feather or down duvet should only be washed once a year. Please note that to wash large bedding items, you will need a drum washing machine with a capacity of at least 15 kg. If possible, we recommend entrusting your duvet to a professional for washing.
If not, here are the steps to follow for an optimal wash of your feather or down duvet:
- Place the duvet into the washing machine without forcing it, as this could damage the fibres.
- Use natural detergents or mild washing liquids
- Please note that fabric softeners must be avoided at all costs, as they could damage the down. - Set the machine to 40ºC and make sure to select a short, gentle spin cycle.
- Preferably dry your natural feather duvet in a tumble dryer at a temperature below 50ºC, adding a few dryer balls or tennis balls to help separate the down. If you do not have a tumble dryer, you can dry it in the open air, patting it regularly.
Your natural feather or down duvet is ready to return to your bed for the greatest pleasure of your sleep.
