Waterproofness: protection against water

It is notably measured by the water column, expressed in millimetres. The higher this value, the better the fabric resists water pressure. A membrane or coating then creates a protective barrier that limits the penetration of precipitation.
Technical garments generally combine this waterproofness with breathability, allowing water vapour produced by the body to escape. The goal: staying protected from the rain while maintaining maximum comfort during exertion.
Waterproofness is therefore particularly suited to wet conditions and bad weather, when the priority is keeping the body dry.
Water-repellency: when water glides off the surface
Often confused with waterproofness, water-repellency refers to a fabric's ability to make water droplets bead up and roll off its surface, without letting them immediately penetrate the fibres.
This property generally relies on a water-repellent treatment applied to the outer surface of the fabric. It provides effective protection against light rain, a few snowflakes or dampness, while preserving the garment's lightness and comfort.
Unlike a waterproof membrane, water-repellency is not designed to withstand sustained rain over time. It provides an initial barrier against moisture, which is particularly useful on down jackets.

Windproofness: protection against gusts of wind
The windproof function refers to a textile's ability to limit air penetration, in order to protect the body from cold draughts.
Particularly appreciated in the mountains or during outdoor activities, this protection helps preserve body heat and reduce the feeling of cold accentuated by the wind. It generally relies on a sufficiently tight weave or a specific membrane that prevents air from easily passing through the fabric.
A windproof garment therefore provides essential protection when temperatures drop or conditions become more exposed, while remaining lightweight and easy to wear.
The effectiveness of a windproof fabric can notably be measured by its air permeability, expressed in l/m²/s. The lower this value, the more the fabric restricts airflow and protects against the cold.
This protection plays an essential role alongside insulation: even high-performance down loses part of its efficiency if the wind easily passes through the outer fabric. Technical textiles thus combine lightness, wind resistance and breathability to provide optimal comfort, even when conditions deteriorate.
