How do you wash your sleeping bag?
Your sleeping bag is essential for the success of your bivouacs and mountain hikes. It guarantees a comfortable, restorative and warm night's sleep. It can be made of polyester (easier to care for but heavier and denser) or down (lightweight and compact, yet warm and comfortable). Proper care of your sleeping bag is essential, so that you can enjoy all its qualities for optimal comfort and extend its lifespan.
If you own a sleeping bag filled with synthetic wadding
We don't blame you! There are some very good sleeping bags with synthetic fibre filling (at Pyrenex, we have chosen to offer only sleeping bags with a natural filling); please follow the steps below:
- Place your sleeping bag in the washing machine with 2 or 3 tennis balls (new or previously washed): the tennis balls will prevent the wadding from forming clumps.
- Run your machine on a 30° programme with no spin cycle or a very low spin speed. - Dry your sleeping bag outdoors if possible, in the open air.
Natural down sleeping bag
The down used is natural (down and small duck feathers), and care is more delicate than for a synthetic down sleeping bag. Check the label on your sleeping bag to see whether machine washing is permitted or whether you need to wash it by hand (both options are possible with your Pyrenex bag).
Machine washing
- Proceed as for washing your sleeping bag in synthetic down, but do not set any spin cycle.
Hand washing
- Soak your sleeping bag for 1h30 to 2 hours in lukewarm to cold water (no more than 30°), in your bathtub with a gentle detergent or shampoo.
- Gently rub the stains
